A native New Yorker, Dick Stockton made his presence known long before college. An astonishing junior player, he captured 20 national championships, including the 1968 Orange Bowl. He went on to play tennis at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Stockton won the NCAA singles title, and let Trinity to a national championship in 1972.
Dick Stockton was inducted into the Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame in 1990, the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame in 1996, the Trinity University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 and most recently was selected for induction into the Eastern Tennis Association Hall of Fame.
Perhaps Stockton’s most revered title was his five-set victory over top ranked Jimmy Connors in the U.S. Pro Indoor finals in 1977. He finished the 1977 season with a world top ten singles ranking. The 1970’s was also the time Stockton played on five U.S. Davis Cup teams. His efforts helped lead the United States to a Davis Cup victory in 1979.
In his 13 year professional career, Stockton won eight singles and sixteen doubles titles. A two-time Grand Slam titleholder, he won the U.S. Open mixed doubles with Rosie Casals in 1975 and the French Open mixed doubles with Anne Smith in 1984. He was also in the mixed doubles finals at Wimbledon in 1976.
Dick Stockton continues to win matches while playing on the senior tour. He is a seven-time Senior Grand Slam title-holder, most recently winning the 2000 45- and- over U.S. Open Senior title. “Stacks” is the Director of Tennis at the Del Rey Tennis Center, in Del Rey Beach, Florida. He resides in Wellington, Florida with wife Liz and his two sons, J.R. Edwards and Spencer. Dick’s two other children, Cole and Sarah, live in Dallas, Texas.
