Being England’s top ranked tennis player is quite an achievement. John Lloyd not only earned this title, he held it five times in his career. He played Davis Cup for England for 11 years, leading his team to the finals in 1978. Although his team lost to the United States squad 4-1, this Englishman became a National hero.
John Lloyd acquired three Grand Slam titles, all in mixed doubles with partner Wendy Turnbull: the French Open in 1982 and Wimbledon in 1983 and 1984. He was a singles finalist at the Australian Open in 1977. Lloyd held the distinction of being the only Englishman in the “Open” era to represent his country in a Grand Slam final until 1998.
This avid moviegoer was the world’s top ranked senior player in 1990 and 1991. Lloyd’s accomplishments are still filling the record books as he regularly competes and wins on the Champions Tour. Lloyd also served his native England as a coach for the British Davis Cup team from 1997 to 2000.
John resides in Pacific Palisades, California, with wife Deborah, son Aiden and daughter Hayley. When he is not gripping a racquet, he latches on to a microphone and does tennis commentary for the Prime Network and for BBC.
