Sherwood Stewart worked for IBM. But one day, a friend convinced him to give the professional circuit a try. Five Grand Slam titles later, "Woody" has skillfully programmed his way into tennis history. Thanks to following his friend’s advice and his powerful backhand, he became the first "doubles specialist" to earn $1 million in prize money.
Among Stewart’s talents is his amazing ability to perform with a variety of players. He won the French Open doubles in 1976 with Freddy McNair and in 1982 with Ferdi Taygan. Teaming with Mark Edmonson, he captured the Australian Open doubles title in 1984. Stewart won the Australian mixed doubles with Zina Garrison in 1987. They went on to the Wimbledon mixed doubles title in 1988, making Stewart the oldest Wimbledon champion at age 42.
In his career, this Texan earned 54 professional doubles titles and one singles title. Stewart, who played on the United States Davis Cup team for three years, holds the distinction of being one of the few stars to play on both the men’s professional tour and the senior tour at the same time. His performance on the senior tour includes three senior Wimbledon doubles victories and one US Open victory.
